Latvian President Demands Immediate Action on Gaza Crisis
(MENAFN) Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs on Tuesday called for urgent steps to secure the release of hostages and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as he met with visiting Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Riga.
President Herzog, accompanied by First Lady Michal Herzog, arrived in the Latvian capital earlier that day for a two-day official visit, which forms part of a broader diplomatic tour across the three Baltic nations.
"We continue to support Israel's right to self-defence, in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law," Rinkēvičs stated during a joint press briefing at Riga Castle following bilateral discussions.
"Every effort must be made to ensure the immediate release of all hostages. At the same time, the extremely severe humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip must be addressed by ensuring the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and by preventing further civilian casualties. Human suffering must come to an end," he added.
The Latvian president emphasized that civilians in Gaza who are unconnected to terrorism must not be denied essential humanitarian assistance, including access to food and medical care.
He also voiced hope for an international resolution that would not only combat terrorism but also uphold core human rights.
The leaders also discussed the state of bilateral relations, with Rinkēvičs noting the strength of ongoing political engagement and economic collaboration between Latvia and Israel.
However, Herzog's visit was not without controversy. The Latvian political party The Progressives criticized the government's stance, calling for a reassessment of its ties with Israel and advocating for Palestinian self-determination.
In a show of dissent, several dozen demonstrators gathered outside the presidential residence in Riga on Tuesday, urging Latvia to suspend its cooperation with Israel.
According to the Israeli president's office, Latvia marks the second leg of Herzog's August 3–6 tour through the Baltic region. He is expected to continue his diplomatic trip in Estonia on Wednesday.
